Hotel Spotlight: Mama Thresl, Saalfelden Leogang

Panorama Hot Tubs, Pine Wood Rooms & Recycled Plastic Slippers: The Hotel Creating Carbon-Neutral Luxury for Active Travellers in Saalfelden Leogang

Located in Saalfelden Leogang, within the Austrian province of SalzburgerLand, Hotel Mama Thresl is perfectly positioned for active winter holidays. It's fresh and vibrant, appealing to holiday makers who love the mountains, nature and adventure, with an undercurrent of laid-back and lovingly created luxury. Thanks to a thorough range of sustainability initiatives, a stay at Mama Thresl can now be carbon-neutral.

Choosing a Room

This Austrian hotel artfully blends cool urban design with natural alpine materials across 50 rooms. All rooms are made using fragrant pine wood from the region, with rock showers and natural stone basins in every bathroom. There are six types of rooms to choose from, starting with the stylish, spacious yet cozy 'woodenstyle' with private balcony, up to 'thresl's one and only', complete with a 40m² private sky terrace, hot tub and outdoor sauna. In other rooms, guests can relax in freestanding baths with magical floor-to-ceiling views of the Pinzgau Mountains, and sip bubbly in private hot tubs on roof terraces.

Rest & Relaxation

Mama Thresl's spa facilities are as stylish as its rooms. The Panoramic Heat is a Finnish sauna with mountain views and cooling rock showers, located next to the calming and organicially structured lounging bunks - the Rest Coves. For relaxation outside of the spa, guests can take a quiet moment for themselves in the calm of The Empty Room. Here, visitors will find complete silence but for the gentle crackling of the floating chimney's fire, an unobstructed view of the Leogang Mountains and hand-carved platforms on which to recline.

The rooftop is a similarly serene spot with hammocks, deck chairs and huge, plush cushions. Cocktails can be ordered from the sleek Island Bar and enjoyed here, or taken self-service at its neighbour, the Mountain's Peak. Here, a two-storey tall wine humidor is mirrored by an indoor climbing wall with a fixed rope route, leading to a platform under the gable on which to read, relax, sip tea and admire the hotel's surroundings.

Winter Sports & Slope-side Fun

Every measure has been taken at Mama Thresl to make winter sports and adventure holidays as easy and as much fun as possible. Avoid ticket desk queues by purchasing a ski pass straight from reception, and store your equipment easily in Mama Thresl's separate ski storage areas - included in the price of each room.

Situated in Saalfelden Leogang, the Skircircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn ski resort is on the hotel's doorstep, providing guests with access to 270km of slopes serviced by 70 state of the art lifts, freeride slopes and snowparks. Off the slopes in winter, visitors can snowshoe through the gorgeous snow-covered landscape, with the awe-inspiring peaks of the Leoganger Steinberge mountain range in the background, glide over the treetops on the Flying Fox XXL or enjoy a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride

After a day of fun on the slopes, visit Mama Thresl's Hendl Fischerei for food, drinks, and après ski. Diners can admire the breathtaking mountain scenery from the Zermatter Gondola, the Champagne Box and the Rich Box, or recharge with ice cream, cocktails and cake in Smoothie Corner. On Fridays, indulge in K+K (Kaiserschmarrn und Kaviar) afternoons while dancing to music from live DJs. Guests of Mama Thresl can also enjoy breakfast here until 10am each day, followed by Huwi's Alm-style grilled chicken and succulent, spicy spare ribs at lunch.

Eco-friendly Measures

Both Mama Thresl and the Saalfelden Leogang region are continuously implementing methods to make holidays here more sustainable. A stay in Mama Thresl can be completely carbon neutral, with energy provided by a biomass cogeneration plant and even the lifts running on an energy recovery system. All food is regional and seasonal, with plenty on offer for vegans and vegetarians.  All of the hotel's warm and comfy slippers are made using six plastic bottles in a closed-loop reclycing system which, within the last five years, has put 132,000 bottles to good use.

Across the wider region, the Leoganger Bergbahnen has formed co-heating partnerships with hotels and mountain huts based on heat recovery from the cable car's motors. Moreover, the snow-making and cable car system are hydraulically and electrically optimised to increase efficiency. Kornel Grundner, Managing Director of Leoganger Bergbahnen, reports that energy consumption has been reduced by 68%. These efforts have been recognised with numerous awards, and the Leoganger Bergbahnen will become the first ski system to partner with the Climate and Energy Strategy Salzburg 2050.
