Unlearn Austria: What Everyone Gets Wrong

Beyond schnitzels, skiing, and the Sound of Music...

What do you think of where you hear the word Austria? For many people, the name conjures images of snow-capped mountains, Mozart echoing through baroque halls, and plates piled high with schnitzel and strudel.

Well that’s not quite accurate. Or at least, it's not only these things...

The Myth: Austrians Just Eat Schnitzel and Strudel

The Reality: Austria has a dynamic food scene that goes way beyond its (admittedly delicious) comfort classics. Vienna is a global food capital with everything from Michelin-starred vegan restaurants to authentic Korean BBQ and Balkan street food. Modern Austrian cuisine is seasonal, experimental, and influenced by its diverse population — think beetroot carpaccio with alpine herbs, or truffle dumplings with wild mushrooms.

The Myth: Austria is Stuck in the Past

The Reality: Sure, Austria wears its history well — but this is also the land of cutting-edge architecture, experimental art, and thriving startup culture. Vienna consistently ranks as one of the world’s most livable cities not just for its beauty, but for its innovation. Salzburg and Linz host boundary-pushing arts festivals. Even deep in the Alps, you’ll find modern eco-hotels, digital nomads, and renewable powered ski-resorts like SkiWelt Kaiser Brixental who have used 100% hydro‑electric power  for lifts & snowmaking since the early 2000s!

The Myth: It’s All Dirndls, Lederhosen, and Edelweiss

The Reality: Most Austrians don’t wear traditional dress unless it’s for a festival — and even then, they might pair it with sneakers and sunglasses. Austria’s fashion scene is bold, minimalist, and globally aware. Streetwear designers, techno clubs, and graffiti art are just as Austrian today as alpine hats and brass bands.

The Myth: Austrians Live in Mountain Villages

The Reality: Over two-thirds of Austrians live in cities or urban areas. Vienna is a metropolis of nearly two million — more than the population of Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Graz combined. Austria is deeply urban and cosmopolitan, with Turkish kebab shops next to 19th-century coffeehouses, and tech startups operating out of refurbished imperial buildings.

The Myth: Austria Lacks Diversity

The Reality: Austria is multicultural and diverse — especially in its cities. A quarter of Viennese residents were born abroad. There are thriving communities from Turkey, the Balkans, Syria, and beyond, and their influence can be tasted, heard, and seen everywhere — from food trucks to music festivals. Austria’s identity is far more fluid and evolving than most outsiders assume.

The Myth: Austria = Germany Lite

The Reality: Ask any Austrian — they’re not Germans. The language may be similar, but the vibe is VERY different. Austrians are more relaxed, more ironic, and a more playful with their identity and their humour. Where Germans might follow the rules to the letter, Austrians prefer to dance around them. Where German humour can be blunt, Austrian humour is sly and layered.
