It’s only natural to discover Austria step by step

Lace up your hiking boots, choose your route, and pack the camera because even though seeing is believing, you’ll want to remember these Austrian holiday moments long after your stay ends. In a land where, in many parts, the horizon is beautifully swallowed up by mighty mountain ranges, where snow-capped glacial summits play peek-a-boo even in the warmer months, and where a green and natural landscape welcomes guests with a fresh air ‘hello’, you’ll find a snapshot of what just might be the perfect walking holiday destination.

From the ‘Top of Salzburg’, the highest lookout platform in the province of SalzburgerLand, gaze across countless 3000m peaks and consider your next trail routing through Zell am See-Kaprun a little further down below! 400km of hiking trails stretch across glaciers, mountains and lakeshores of this very picturesque holiday region. Of course, crystal-clear Lake Zell also lures many-a-walker to have a cooling splash after a day on the mountain.

In the Alps most legendary sporting town, hikers can experience 1000km of signposted trails winding through the grassy mountains of Kitzbühel. Lodge-to-lodge routes are popular here offering a great way to experience alpine mountain culture, warm Tirolean hospitality, and of course superb rambling!

The four holiday regions of the Kitzbüheler Alpen – Brixental, Hohe Salve, Pillerseetal and St. Johann in Tirol offer more than 2500km of hiking trails dotted with alpine inns and huts. There’s something for the whole family across ten mountain adventure worlds, including 25 themed trails. Don’t miss a visit to the prehistoric Triassic Park on the Steinplatte where you’ll soon understand why an ‘underwater gondola’ takes you there.

Beauty might be in the eye of the beholder, but one can’t help but take a long, lingering look at the undisputed gorgeous offerings of the Alpbach Valley. Here, picturesque ‘flower box’ houses complement a valley awash with wildflowers and dramatic peaks stand guard in every direction. Tip: the Alpbachtal Seenland Card offers free guided walks, access to four summer mountain lifts and well as free admission to local attractions and public transportation.

In neighbouring Wildschönau, the scenery is equally inspiring as a network of 300km of wonderful walking trails lead through four pretty villages where open wooden books with panorama maps serve as the meeting points for walks. Locals like to say that “here, you are with friends”, and as a result one can’t help but be charmed by this lovely valley.

Awarded Tirol’s Hiking Quality Seal, the 300km network of scenic trails and paths in and around St. Anton am Arlberg offer themed and guided experiences. Cable cars whisk walkers up to almost 3000m, from where routes for all ability levels lead from hut to hut. All St. Anton am Arlberg accommodation providers give their guests the St. Anton Summer card, offering a whole range of free opportunities for hiking and e-bikes tours, participation in the children’s programme and complimentary use of area cable cars for a day.

And, in Austria’s southern province of Carinthia, the 43-stage, multi-national Alpe-Adria Trail stretches from the foot of Austria’s highest mountain, the 3798m Grossglockner, to the shores of the Ariatic at Muggia, near Trieste. This is big-time walking at its best. Tip: stay in Bad Kleinkirchheim, a leading destination for wellness and spa in Austria in the midst of Carinthia’s Nockberge mountains.

Widely considered one of Europe’s top walking destinations, Austria ‘on foot’ offers its guests knockout alpine and countryside scenery, a well-marked and maintained trail system covering some 40,000km across the country, six National Parks, some 60 protected nature preserves, authentic alpine villages connected to the mountains by summer lifts, and an excellent network of hut-to-hut routes where walkers can explore freely without having to carry a heavy load – luggage (as well as accommodation and tasty meals) will be waiting at the next hut.

An Austrian walking holiday can easily be self-arranged through the useful information on www.austria.info/summer, or by the walking experts at Ramblers Worldwide Holidays who offer small, friendly group walks throughout Austria with experienced guides who’ll ensure an authentic, native experience. www.ramblersholidays.co.uk
