Obertauern: SalzburgerLand's Snow-Sure Resort with Altitude

With some of Austria’s deepest snow for freeriding, a long November-May ski season, and one of the steepest mogul slopes in Europe, Obertauern is a paradise for winter sports mavens.

The Tauern Round provides a unique ski circuit with 26 modern cable cars and ski lifts connecting 100km of slopes, whilst plentiful powder snow and a basin location make Obertauern ideal for off-piste freeriding.

Boarders eager to try out new tricks will find the opportunity in the Snow Park. Head here to learn the art of freestyling across 40 features including kickers, rails and boxes, or join other ambitious boarders in the Jib Alley.

Five pristine slopes spanning a distance of 70km allow cross country skiers to explore the mountain and take in the scenery at their own pace. Add an extra element by trying your hand at a Biathlon Adventure. This combination of cross-country skiing and precision shooting has been popularised by the recent success of Austrian athletes in the World Cup.

From winter hiking and snowshoeing to ice climbing and airboarding, activities at every level of adrenaline are on offer. Swap your skies for wheels with a snow biking taster course at the Schischule Koch, or chase thrills at the snow-kiting school as you’re propelled along by the mountain winds.

For dining, drinking and dancing, Obertauern is home to 25 ski huts offering local dishes, cold beer and warm sun decks, as well of plenty of restaurants.

Ski-in ski-out hotels, ski schools and ski hire points a-plenty make organising your holiday here simple, even when travelling with children. In Obertauern, every child is treated like the future star of the slopes thanks to the region’s specially trained instructors, discounts on passes and equipment free of charge.  New for 2019/20 is children’s ski area Bobby’s Monsterpark, with a 200m under-roof magic carpet and plenty of ways in which to keep kids entertained, making this destination even more enjoyable for the whole family.

There are plenty of slopes-side activities too. Traditional tobogganing is heaps of fun, and Obertauern offers a variety of runs with 6.5km of slopes dedicated to sledges. You can fly down the sun-kissed snow by day, or visit the Gnadenalm at night and glide down under floodlights with the stars as guides.

Looking for something a little more relaxing? Horse-drawn sleigh rides through the region run from 11am until 9pm. See more of Obertauern’s fairytale landscape while wrapped up in warm blankets with your nearest and dearest.

Events for 2019/20

Ski-Opening: Obertauern’s season kicks off on 28th November with the iconic Ski-Opening concert, at which the start of winter sees rambunctious open-air celebrations. This year, the concert is headlined by famous German rapper CRO on Saturday 30th. Tickets for the Ski-Opening concert can be purchased at www.obertauern-tickets.com.

Tauernadvent: Obertauern has SalzburgerLand’s highest altitude Christmas Market. Open every week from Friday through Sunday, Tauernadvent is the place to enjoy mulled wine and punch while meandering through stands showcasing handcrafted regional goods. Live music and staged readings are guaranteed to help you get into the Christmas spirit.

Krampuslauf and Krampusparty: On 7th December, hundreds of Krampusse (a mythical beast in Austrian folklore, seeking out and telling off naughty children during the Christmas season) parade across the pass summit. The parade is followed by a grand party in the heart of the area. This combination of folklore, mysticism and music will give you shivers as well as a chance to dance the night away.

Gamsleiten Criterion 2020: For the 13th year, Austria’s largest treasure hunt will take place on 18th April. Join the jovial mood as hundreds of participants search the Gamsleiten 2 – one of the steepest slopes in Europe with amazing views – for 30 hidden chests, each with a prize inside. The first prize: a BMW car.
