New Hermit Wanted in Saalfelden

One of the oldest hermitages in Europe is looking for a new resident. Check out the job application - and pay the successful candidate a visit later in the year.

Missing the lockdown tranquility? The Roman Catholic hermitage in Saalfelden, Salzburg, is looking for a new hermit to continue its more than 350 year old tradition. The successful candidate will spend April to November in a hut-sized chapel carved into a steep rock face 1,001 meters above sea level. The mountain home comes with breathtaking panorama views over the snow-covered glacier and the valley but no power, no running water or heating.

To be considered, applicants must be Christians (but not necessarily Catholic) and need to demonstrate both their motivation to live in (almost) solitude as well as a reasonable fitness level. A letter of motivation alongside a CV and a picture are required. Future hermits from around the world are invited to apply until 20 February

Die hermitage in Saalfelden, close to Lichtenberg Castle, was built in the 17th century and is considered to be one of the oldest in Europe. Locals and travellers are welcome to visit the hermit during the summer months, have a chat and enjoying the surroundings. To date, 34 hermits have lived in the unusual mountain home.
