Birdwatching at Lake Neusiedl

The beautiful steppe lake about an hour's drive away from Vienna is many things to many people: Birdwatchers and nature lovers appreciate the nearby Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park with its more than three hundred different species of birds nesting in its vast reed belts - more than anywhere else on the European mainland. With an exotic appearance reminiscent of the African plains, you can watch wild animals close up and experience the unspoilt character of this fascinating landscape. Take a tour of the park with knowledgeable rangers who respect local wildlife and can get you as close as possible without disturbing it. Even those who have never gone birdwatching before will come away from the experience with a new found appreciation for the proud eagle, the tiny chiffchaff and other native bird species.

Outdoor enthusiasts and culture vultures also appreciate the region to the east of Lake Neusiedl. The landscape here extends from the reed beds and salt ponds to the Hanság fens in Hungary and lends itself to all kinds of sports activities, including extended bike tours.

Slow down and take your time to absorb the wild beauty and serenity of Burgenland's nature paradise, and you might just rediscover some of the peace and serenity we are so often missing from our own busy lives today.
